Welcome to campus dispatchCampus Dispatch is a working project of the Advanced Reading/Writing ESL class at Seton Hall University. Students in the class conduct surveys on campus and then compose reports for this website. Join me in celebrating everyone's hard work and continued progress with Academic English.
--Bryan Meadows, ESLP 0431 course instructor After our second campus dispatch we were able to learn the students opinions about foreign subjects.
All the students agreed that it is important to be open to learn a new language. "I think that right now it is really important to be billingual" - Hanna When they were asked about study abroad, their answers were similar too. Despite the fact that some of them did not have the opportunity, they believe that new students should have. "I think it is up to you to decide, but everyone should have the opportunitty" - Emily Health care is a right or a privilege?"Health care is a right. I said that because I believe that every human being has value. And I think what we can do as a society is to support and realize individual value of each person, and one way of doing that is with health care" - Prof. Meadows.
Even thought this is a personal opinion, professor Meadows is right. Health care is recognized as an internationally human right. Our campus dispatch number 3 is all about health care in the USA. Coming from a different country and studying about health care I had the chance to learn how does it work in the USA. In my home country we have access to public health care, and for me this was also something that I never had to think to much about. If I need a visit to the ER, or an ambulance, I could call without worrying with bills. I never realized how lucky I was until I get here. |
students and staff from seton hall During our campus dispatch we had the chance to learn a little more about the students and staff from the campus.
We met people interested in computer science, diplomacy, history and marketing. The most interested fact was when they were asked about their dream job, most of them had to take a time to think about the question. They knew why they choose their major, but they had no idea what they are doing afterwards. Meanwhile, the staff had no trouble answering the question, they knew exactly what their dream job was, and they were living that actually. So if I can give you an advice based on my researchs, it'll be to focus on the present, and the good things will come eventually in your future. Walking around the campus of Seton Hall University, we can find different answers to 3 questions. The community of the campus took a position with their answers. Some of them agreed and some did not. The questions were simple and easy and for that reason each interview was short and didn´t take a long time. For the first question, the best environment to do different activities such as studying, watching a movie, resting, or exercising is a cold weather, everybody said a resounding yes. But Yubrash told us a little more. He told us: “I would say it is a tough decision. I would like to vary it because those are very separate activities.” For the next question, is it necessary to be in good physical and mental condition to perform better in studies? everybody responded yes again. And they told us the importance of the physical part and also the importance of the mental part at the time of studying and performing better. In the last question, between soccer, basketball and American football, the best sport is soccer, everybody agreed again. For example, Joseph, who is from Colombia, gave us a big smile when we asked this question. None of them hesitated to tell us that soccer for them is the best sport of the three mentioned. |
HEALTH CARE IN THE UNITED STATES
In our Campus Dispatch #3, we had the opportunity to walk around Jubilee Hall and talk to some employees and members of the staff of Seton Hall University. This time, I could ask 3 questions about health care in the United States. I enjoyed this because in all cases I got good and long answers. The first question was, “Do you think health care in the U.S. should be free?” In this question I got interesting answers. For example, Ms. Marian told me: “Not totally, but I think it should be cheaper like for people who can´t afford it.” The second question was, “Do you have health insurance right now?” Everybody responded with a resounding yes. I think it is an important thing for living in the United States because everyone knows that the health care here is very expensive. The third and last question was, “What kind of medical treatments should health care insurance plans cover?” I could talk with Ms. Elizabeth who is a psychology student. Her answer was very interesting. She told me: “I think there should be an increase of health services or health insurance that covers mental health services. Also, I think things that are related to birth and delivery for certain should be covered. Finally, dental insurance.” |
The Seton Hall Campus
Seton Hall University offers its students and visitors a variety of places to recreate, study, eat and exercise. Given this diversity of places and through a small interview with some members of the pirate community, we wanted to know what their favorite place is, what food they recommend on campus and normally how they get to campus.
Among the different answers that we found, we can see that for some people the campus living room is their favorite place. This is the case of Bryce who told us: "The living room is my favorite place because I can meet up with my friends.” But without a doubt the library is the favorite place for most of the people we interviewed. For example, for Alan, who is a member of the university staff, the library is his favorite place since as he said in his own words "I can meet with nice people and classmates.”
On the other hand, all the people interviewed agreed that any place in the university offers excellent and varied food. This is the case, for example, of the Dining Room, the Student Center, or as Jacob said on this point when he is in on campus the best place is definitely Jersey Mike's.
Finally, they talked about how they get to campus. Tashed and Jacob indicated that they drive, while Bryce said that he lives on campus. Alan also said, "I like to walk since I live close to the university."

STUDY plan
In our last campus dispatch we learned more about how the students and teachers are preparing themselves for finals. We asked about study plans for the semester. Here are some tips for you:
1- Take notes during your classes, so this way it’s not gonna be so stressful to study at the end of the semester. (Prof. Joewono)
2- Study 15min and take a 10min break.(Student Julliane)
3 - Find a quiet place where you can focus, like the campus library. (Esl student)
Also, if you need any help with your classes or studies, according to prof. Joewono, “If you are a freshman you can go to the freshman and if you are a upperclassmen you can reach your advisor.”
